FlightClub PROton Build Series

FlightClub PROton Build Series

Ahh, PROtons, all the beautiful configurations that can be made!  The PROton build will be done in three builds.  What do you expect from the most versatile race frame on the market??  I literally stay awake at night thinking about all the different configurations I’m going to build my PROtons.

If you haven’t heard about the PROton yet, check out the PROton page, prototype, ultralight and product page.  The PROton is a configurable frame that lets you adapt to any type of flying you are into.  At the core of PROton is the Nucleus CNC plate.  It lets you build your quad in skeleton (standoff) or canopy mode.  There will be 5 different types of arms you can select, 4″, 5″ race, 5″ practice, 5″ stretch X, 5.5″ and 6″ arms.  With 5 arms and 2 modes, you can configure 10 different quads.  With the same body you can have a 4″ screamer or a 6″ long range freestyle quad.

Here are the PROton Builds coming:

1.  Ultralight PROton:  this is currently my favorite race setup.  It took me a while to get my ego in check and realize that I can’t handle a super powerful quad.  What it lacks in power it makes up for in surgical precision around a track.  Not to mention the crazy long flight times.  I originally build this with the Hyperlite 2204 Floss motors for a 215g build but it was actually too light.  I found myself using bigger batteries just to pump up the weight so it would fly better.  With a 1300mAh pack i could get around 6-5 min flight times but it was so light it was too hard to control.

  • Sub 240g (no props or battery)
  • Skeleton Mode
  • 5″ Race arms

2.  Beast PROton:  this build is for the animals that can handle blazing around a track at near full throttle.

  • Around 285g
  • High KV Motor
  • Canopy Mode
  • 5″ Race arms

3.  Long Range / Freestyle PROton:  This thing is fun!  Being able to pretty much fly as far as you want and explore your surroundings like a bird.

  • Around 300g
  • TBS Crossfire
  • Low KV motor
  • 5s battery
  • 5.5″ or 6″ arms

Check back soon for the build posts/videos and kits.

What motors would you do with the 4” arms?

i will be running some super light high kv like the floss motors: https://fpv-flightclub.com/products/products-pyrodrone-hyperlite-2204-floss-series/

Sweet. I was just worried that you said the hyperlites you put on made the quad too light, so I didn’t know if those would be way too light on a 4″?

for a 4″ you’ll want light motors cause you’re only swinging 4″ props, not 5″

Super interested in the low kv/5s build as I’ve been seeing that pop up here and there. I’d like to try it as well. I just got my proton and have also been thinking about a long range build as well on these supposedly more efficient setups. In the end, my goal is more flight/stick time.

my ultralight PROton gives me about 6-7min flight times with a 1300mah. it’s crazy

Are you gonna get injection molds go the proton tpu canopy?

most likely not. injection molds are crazy expensive!

Hey, I’m been trying with no luck to get the rssi moving in the receiver tab in BF and in the OSD. I’m using the FrSky XSRF4O and it’s just frozen, can anyone help? Also in the setup tab in BF the mah and amperage are going crazy, like it’s 30a and the mah is going faster than when it’s actually flying…

Here is a pic if anyone can diagnose the RSSI and why those two things are going nuts? The FrSky XSRF4O is binded and all the switches are set but no RSSI. I can see the RSSI on my transmitter just not in BF or my OSD, at least it’s frozen and not moving 🙁

if you are using a Taranis the channel map is incorrect. it should be TAER1234.

what do you have set in the volt/amp tab in betaflight?

This is how the Q R7 does the channels and my sticks are working fine on all 4 main channels except the RSSI bar Aux 4 is frozen and my transmitter is showing RSSI so my transmitter is picking up the RSSI so it seems something in BF is not setup correctly

Here is a pic of my power and battery and ports tab

Pretty sure if you have the Fr Sky XSRF4O that BF should look the same when I get mine working!?

I got to experience 3D quad flying for the first time last weekend when “Zoe” flew at our field. I was amazed and excited by this form of flying! Of course I realize now that Zoe is incredibly talented and 3D flying may be much more challenging then I realize. Anyway, she recommended 5s packs, 3D props, KISS FC’s, and separate ESC’s. What PROton frame do you think would be best suited to this type of flying?

the setup all depends on what type of flying you are doing. unless you have already mastered 4s you shouldn’t just jump to 5s. you will just crash hard and fast. it sounds like “Zoe” is a freestyle pilot. While PROton can be used as a freestyle frame, it’s really designed to be a race frame. biggest difference in a freestyle frame and race frame is size and weight. you’ll have much more room in a freestyle frame thus making them heavier. that’s why “Zoe” is rocking a 5s

I have a 6″ skeleton proton with 1600kv motors that runs 5 and 6s but this is mostly setup as a long range quad. it’s loads of fun

Mike, what do you think of doing a proton 6″ long range build using the new DJI Googles RE with the Ocusync module for VTX and RX? They are out now but have not seen anyone build it. Also, I know you are working on a 6″ build with proton, but until then, can you post the specs for what you recommend we buy to assemble one so those of us eager to build a long range proton can do it.

so far there are the parts i’m using for my 6″ proton

      PROton 6″ in skeleton mode
      Tmotor F40v2 1600kv
Cicada 30A esc rated for 3-6s
      Foxeer Arrow v2
      TBS unify Pro Hv
      tbs crossfire

i’m using a betaflight f4 now but that can change.

When will you be doing a built for Long Range / Freestyle PROton?

    Thanks Rex

i’m still testing out components. right now i’m leaning towards the aikon ak32 with the helio spring. loving this combo
